Ready for eSIM? Take this Assessment

Written by Ronald Weststrate | Aug 15, 2019 4:49:40 PM

In the past several blogs, we’ve learned how eSIM technology will eliminate some of IoT’s most cumbersome complexities, such as unreliable device connectivity, roaming fees, and network shut-downs. If you haven’t read these eSIM primers, start here to prepare you for this blog.

With a strong understanding of how eSIM works and how it’s applied, it’s time to learn how the technology might solve your specific IoT challenges. Take the readiness assessment below to determine if a Natively Connected, Future Proof, or Auto Provisioning use case will best meet your technical and business needs.

  1. Will your IoT solution be launched in multiple regions, countries, or worldwide?

    1. Yes – We plan to deploy to a wide geographic area.
    2. No – We are primarily deploying in one region or area.

  2. Do you have plans to expand your coverage in the future?

    1. Yes – We plan to deploy to other regions in the next 12 months.
    2. No – We plan to deploy to a single region for the foreseeable future.
    3. Potentially – We’re open to expansion but haven’t defined additional locations yet.

  3. Will your SIM card be easily accessible within your IoT device?

    1. No – our SIM cards will be embedded or deployed in remote locations. Updates will be difficult.
    2. Yes – our devices are small and SIMs are easy to access if we need to make changes.

  4. Will your devices be mobile or static?

    1. Mobile, but only in one region for now.
    2. Mobile, traveling to many different areas, regions, or even countries.
    3. Static, remaining in their original deployment destination.
    4. Static, but potentially moved to other areas or regions.

  5. What is the typical lifespan of your devices?

    1. Fewer than 4 years
    2. 5-10 years
    3. More than 10 years

  6. If you had to change your connectivity provider or update your SIM card, how would you accomplish this?

    1. Physically swap out SIM cards.
    2. Physically swap out devices.
    3. Update information on my SIM cards remotely.

Scoring your Answers

Add up the appropriate points for each question and calculate a grand total:

    • Question 1: A = 5 points, B = 2 points
    • Question 2: A = 5 points, B = 1 point, C = 2 points
    • Question 3: A = 5 points, B = 2 points
    • Question 4: A = 2 points, B = 5 points, C = 1 point, D = 2 points
    • Question 5: A = 2 points, B = 3 points, C = 5 points
    • Question 6: A = 1 point, B = 2 points, C = 5 points

Readiness Results

0-15 points: Utilize Traditional SIMs

Your IoT solution is fairly straightforward and won’t require the extra complexity of multiple carrier profiles, regional compliance regulations, or costly technology upgrades. Traditional SIM technology is the best solution for you at this time.

15-25 points: Utilize Natively Connected eSIM

You’ve got the right idea. Start off local with your IoT deployment, but stay open to expanding your business and solution offerings to different areas or regions – or even globally – in the future. eSIM technology will help, when the time comes, to easily transition into a larger solution offering footprint.

25+ points: Select Future Proof/Auto Provisioning eSIM

There’s no limit to what your IoT solution can do or where it can go. eSIM technology is the perfect answer to help ensure seamless connectivity and global coverage of your IoT devices, without the headache of managing SIM card inventory and provisioning processes for multiple carriers, in multiple regions.
